Council

Councillor Solethu Lucas was born and bred at Moses Mabida Township in Kirkwood in the Sundays River Valley Municipal Area.

He attended Bongolethu Lower Primary School, Bontrug Higher Primary School and then went to Moses Mabida Senior Secondary School still in Kirkwood. During his years in high school, he was a member of COSAS. He studied Practical Labour, Diploma in Municipal Finance Management at Nelson Mandela University. He is now pursuing a degree in Public Administration at the University of South Africa.

Mayor Lucas has occupied different political positions in his party. He started being a member of the Sarah Baartman District’s Council in 2011, where he found home for the past 11 years occupying different positions. These include being a Chief Whip, member of the Municipal Public Accounts’ Committee, MMC: Planning and Economic Development, MMC: Corporate Services and Administration and member of the Provincial Geographic Name Change Committee, a position he still occupies. Councillor Lucas was elected as the new Mayor of Sundays River Valley Municipality in June 2023.
