Sundays River Valley Municipality in partnership with ESKOM has launched Langbos Electrification Project on 15 January 2019 at Langbos informal Settlement near Addo.

Over two hundred mud-houses and shacks will be electrified during this eight (8) week project. Langbos has been prioritized for electrification to minimize criminal activities that mostly take place during night time as it is too dark. Providing this area with electricity will assist in minimizing shack fires and also rid the scourge of illegal connection of electricity which endangers residents especially children.

Mayor of SRVM Nombulelo Bixa said there are plans to expand this project to other communities similar to Langbos.
She also reiterated that this project will create employment opportunities for the residents of Langbos.
“We know that when there are projects in other areas these people don’t get employment, it is for this reason that we decided that Langbos residents will decide who gets employed according to their lists,” she said.
Fred Petani, a resident of Langbos said he is very excited that they will finally have electricity as this will change their lives.
“My family and I got here in 1980 and we have been without electricity since then but now we are seeing the light. Having electricity in Langbos will change a lot of things such as decreasing incidents of fire and criminal activities,” he said.
Another resident, Nandipha Kama said having electricity will not only keep them safe and make their lives easier but will also assist in sharpening their children’s minds.
“We are so grateful for this project because we have been through so much as this community, people have been killed in the dark, while others have been burnt. “
“We are also happy now that our children will be exposed to the educational programmes on TV which will sharpen their minds and keep them busy instead of going into the streets and be exposed to drugs and other wrongdoings,” she added.
